Here at Woodberry, we know that your commercial outdoor furniture is an investment. We are also aware that there’s a lot of consideration that goes into purchasing your establishments new furniture:

  • Is it long lasting?
  • Is it weather resistant?
  • And, how much will it cost?

Teak furniture has become an industry favourite due to its versatility and golden colour that  gradually mellows out into a beautiful silver-grey. While teak wood is often ranked as one of the best hardwoods for outdoor furniture, you may still need some more information so that you can make the right decision for your business.

So, we’re sharing the advantages and disadvantages of commercial teak furniture so you can make the most informed decision possible.

Advantages of commercial teak furniture

Hard-wearing and Weather Resistant

Teak is widely considered to be one of the most durable hardwoods. This is due to it being close-grain, and full of minerals and natural oils. The close-grain of the wood makes it more resistant to splitting and warping making it ideal for frequent use and unpredictable weather conditions.

Teak is one of the few woods that contains its own natural, protective oils. These oils repel water which prevents rot, warping and cracking. These natural oils also act as a pest repellant.  This means that teak furniture is naturally more weather resistant and reliable throughout the seasons.

Low Maintenance

New teak comes with a golden colour which gradually fades to a beautiful silvery-grey as it ages. This is the result of wood being exposed to rain and UV rays causing the surface layer to oxidise.

Due to the natural, protective oils in teak it generally doesn’t need re-treating. We don’t recommend the use of teak oil as this hardwood ages so gracefully on its own. In fact, teak oil may promote the formation of mould and mildew if it is done incorrectly. As well as this, it may result in that golden colour becoming darker .

You can simply rinse the table with water or make a mixture consisting of 1 gallon of water, a quarter of a cup of bleach and two thirds of a cup of light laundry detergent. With a stiff hand brush and a good scrub this mixture will help to remove any mould and mildew from the surface layer of the furniture.

However, if you love teak for its golden hue it will require more regular upkeep. For this we would recommend treating your teak furniture at least once a year with the Golden Care teak cleaner, protector and shield. It is best to do this in the warmer seasons as it allows your outdoor furniture to dry fully, giving you the best results.

Longevity

While teak outdoor furniture tends to be slightly more expensive than other hardwoods; we certainly see it as an investment.

Due to its close-grain and natural protective oils, teak can handle harsh weather and frequent use without warping, splitting or growing mould. As we are so sure on the reliability of teak outdoor furniture, we offer a 5-10 year structural guarantee on our teak dining tables, chairs and benches. However, with care and maintenance we hope your furniture will last a lot longer.

Due to the long lifespan of teak furniture it is definitely worth paying a slightly higher price over getting cheaper furniture that you would have to replace much sooner.

Sustainability of Teak

Teak furniture doesn’t just have a higher price point because of its long life span and beautiful colour.

Teak wood is slow growing and only grows in certain parts of the world. As teak is so hardy and beautiful it makes it more vulnerable to being over sourced, which would then lead to it becoming endangered. This means it is essential that we are responsibly farming and sourcing teak.

Here at Woodberry we try to keep sustainability in mind. So, not only are we FSC certified but so is our teak wood supplier.

What exactly does this mean?

The FSC or ‘The Forest Stewardship Council’ is a world wide non-profit company based in Germany. They work with the aim of promoting safe management of the worlds forestation and the wild life and people that reside there.
